Are you worried that elderly people will leave the stove on?

Airis will turn off the stove before a fire can start

In care settings, such as extra care and assisted living, the risk of a kitchen fire is high. During cooking, it’s quite possible for older and vulnerable residents to be forgetful, get distracted, fall asleep, fall ill, or even fall down and hurt themselves. They may have early-onset dementia.
But it’s important for elderly people to be able to cook for themselves even if they are getting forgetful – as long as they can cook safely. Cooking maintains their independence and sense of dignity.

Airis will turn off the stove if the elderly people forget to turn it off

With Unicook Airis the elderly can use their existing stoves just the way they’ve used to – but a lot safer. Airis will shut off the stove if they forget it on or if the stove gets too hot. By taking care of their cooking safety, you’ll help the elderly people feel more confident too.

Airis is easy to install to an existing stove. An electrician can fit a complete Airis system in under an hour, and its wireless design makes it versatile enough to adapt to many kitchen layouts.

We think it’s better to prevent a fire than to suppress it

Many care settings, such as supported living and extra care, work hard to protect their residents from kitchen fires. However, they typically install fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire blankets, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems. All of these are designed to trigger an alarm or put out a fire after it has started – by which time there could already be considerable damage, injury, or even a fatality.

Residential care managers can choose to install Airis above each hob. Airis monitors both the atmosphere and human activity around the cooker and can detect when a kitchen fire or smoke is imminent. It then cuts the power to the hob, preventing cooking fires and smoke before they can even start. There’s simply no more reliable way for elderly residents to be protected from kitchen fires.

Knowing that the elderly are safe 24/7 can be challenging, especially remotely

When the power to the stove is shut off, an SMS message or email will be sent to up to five phone numbers. After this alert has been received, the care worker, manager or warden can visit the resident to see why the alert was triggered and whether the resident is safe and well. Where appropriate, they can have a chat with the resident to understand what caused the alarm and how it could be avoided in the future.

You can also configure Airis to notify you if the elderly resident is using the hob in an unusual way.

For example, if they cook at night or haven’t used the stove-top for several days. This can signal changes in the elderly resident’s cognitive condition. The sooner their personal care can be adjusted based on their own individual needs, the better care you can provide.

Give the elderly independence and sense of dignity without having to worry about their safety

When elderly people lose the ability to cook for themselves, it can be a blow to their dignity and self-esteem. It could spell the end of their independence. So enabling them to continue cooking for themselves – safely and confidently, for as long as possible with no risk of cooking fires – is extremely important.

Do residents need to learn to use Airis?

No. They don’t even need to know it’s there. In an extra care setting, if Airis cuts the electricity supply to the hob then it’s the care worker or manager who will quickly and easily restore the power – at the flick of a switch – after checking on the resident’s wellbeing.

More than 200.000 people across the Europe are cooking safer with Airis.

We founded Safera Ltd. in 2007 with one mission – to prevent cooking fires. We think it’s better to prevent kitchen fires in advance than to suppress them after they have ignited.
